1968 Protests at Columbia University: A Flashback

A Historic Struggle

As part of the Black Power movement, the Protests of 1968 at Columbia University spanned two rounds: the first from March 27 to April 30, and the second from May 17 to May 22.

Campus Protests and Arrests

In April 1968, campus flyers called for protests against the university's affiliation with the Institute for Defense Analysis, which was involved in military research. The protests escalated into building occupations and arrests, including the detention of students and protesters.

Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations and Crackdowns

Decades later, in April 2024, pro-Palestinian protests and encampment on Columbia's campus sparked memories of the 1968 unrest. The demonstrations, which protested the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, led to arrests and raised concerns about potential law enforcement crackdowns.
